Chances are most of you won't believe us if we were to say that you could have a sumptuous meal for less than Rs. 40 in this day and age. If your appetite is whet enough then make a trip to the SDA Market and a meal at Little Punjab would redefine value for money.
Food options at Little Punjab
Nestled in one corner of the SDA Market, otherwise known as IIT Barista, is one quaint food joint that serves lip-smacking food at unbelievable prices. Operated by a gentleman who goes by the name of Gurmeet, Little Punjab has been serving wholesome plates of rice based meals like Rajma-Chawal (less than Rs. 35), Kadhi-Chawal (less than Rs. 35), Chhole-Chawal (less than Rs. 35) and Paneer Chawal (less than Rs. 45) for the past five years.
The place operates only during lunch hours and no meal's priced over Rs 40! Understated and very minimal in the truest sense of the word, the food does all the talking at Little Punjab. Hordes of students from IIT and JNU and just about everyone from the offices in the market complex swears by the food here.
Little Punjab History
The man behind Little Punjab has been associated with the food business for the past two decades. Gurmeet was one of the first people to start the dabba delivery system in Delhi but its limited scope made him shift gears. He then started a lunch special at offices but that too was a short-lived enterprise.
When a friend offered him the current place that Little Punjab operates from Gurmeet lapped up the opportunity with both hands. Giving flyers, advertisement or even visiting cards a miss he simply distributed free lunch coupons that were valid for two days across the IIT campus. His endeavor worked; students thronged to the place and things were never the same.
Plus Points About Little Punjab
The positive word of the publicity spread and Gurmeet was surprised to see students land up with the free coupons weeks after he had distributed them; he never refused the students that one free lunch and they have never gone anywhere else.
The Rajma-Rice is exceptionally tasty and even though it might be presumptuous to suggest but chances are you might not have had such a lovely plate of the humble pulse any where else. Most of the patrons are regulars and Gurmeet not only knows them but also knows their preferences. Simply put for any restaurant no matter how large or small, to survive the food needs to be good and this along with a dedication to hygiene is something that has stood the test of time at Little Punjab.
Served in paper plates that are surprisingly sturdy, the food is prepared and served with utmost care for a place that might be labeled 'street side'. Even with a lassi thrown in a lunch here would be just over one US dollar!
Try Little Punjab once and you'd love it.
